Istanbul and Cappadocia are the two places almost every first trip to Turkey is built around. They are about 730 km apart, so the real question is not whether you can see both in a week. You can. The question is how to split the days, which direction to travel in, and where to leave room for the one thing that weather can take away from you: the balloon flight.
Here is a seven day plan that we give to our own guests, written by people who meet those guests at their hotel door every morning.
The Short Answer: 3 Days Istanbul, 3 Days Cappadocia, 1 Travel Day

This split works because Cappadocia needs whole days, not half days. Both of our full day tours run roughly 09:00 to 17:00 with hotel pickup included, so a day that starts with an airport transfer is never a full touring day.
Which Direction: Istanbul First or Cappadocia First?
Start in Istanbul. There are three reasons, and only one of them is about convenience.
- International flights land in Istanbul anyway. You avoid an extra connection on your most tired day.
- Cappadocia in the middle protects the balloon flight. Flights are cancelled for wind and low visibility, and the decision is made at around 04:30 on the morning itself. If Cappadocia sits in the middle of your week, a cancelled Wednesday becomes a Thursday flight. If it sits at the very end, a cancellation means no flight at all.
- Istanbul is a good soft landing. Jet lag and a 04:30 balloon pickup do not mix well on the same night.
If your return flight leaves from Istanbul, book the last Cappadocia to Istanbul flight of the evening on day 7, or fly back on the morning of day 7 and keep the last night in Istanbul near the airport.
Day by Day
Days 1 to 3: Istanbul
Three days is enough for the classics without rushing: Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and the Basilica Cistern on the first day, Topkapı Palace and the Grand Bazaar on the second, and a Bosphorus ferry plus the Asian side on the third. Keep the third afternoon light, because you are travelling that night.
Day 3 Evening or Day 4 Morning: Istanbul to Cappadocia
You have three sensible options, and they buy you very different things.

Day 4: Arrival Day, Keep It Light
Do not book a full day tour for your arrival day. Instead:
- Walk up to Göreme Sunset Point or Lovers' Hill in the late afternoon.
- Book a sunset ATV tour through Love Valley and Rose Valley. It runs one to two hours and it is the single best introduction to the landscape. Current pricing is on the tour page.
- Eat a testi kebab, the clay pot kebab that is broken open at the table, and go to bed early.
Early is not a figure of speech here. Balloon pickup is one to one and a half hours before sunrise, which means the phone rings at around 04:30 in summer.
Day 5: Balloon at Sunrise, Red Tour After
The hot air balloon flight is the reason most people come. Standard flights last about an hour and carry 16 to 24 passengers, and you can see the current price on the tour page. You are back at your hotel by about 08:30, which is exactly why this pairs well with a tour that starts at 09:30.
The Red Tour (hotel pickup at 09:30, back by 17:00) covers the northern half of the region: Devrent Valley, the pottery workshops of Avanos, the Göreme Open Air Museum with its Byzantine rock churches, Uçhisar Castle and Pigeon Valley. Lunch and entrance fees are included, except the Dark Church, which needs a separate ticket at the gate and is worth it.
If you already hold a Turkish Museum Pass, the Red Tour without museum tickets may suit you better, since you pay the entrances yourself at the gate.
Day 6: Underground City and the Southern Valleys
The Underground City Tour (pickup at 09:00), which many agencies still call the Green Tour, goes south: Kaymaklı Underground City, the Soğanlı or Ihlara valleys and the panoramic viewpoints along the way. All entrance fees and lunch are included on this one, so there is nothing to pay at the gate.
Keep the evening free. A Turkish night show, a wine tasting in Ürgüp or simply a long dinner on a cave hotel terrace is the right way to close a trip.
Day 7: Your Backup Morning
If the balloon flew on day 5, use this morning slowly: a walk in Pigeon Valley, a last Turkish breakfast on a terrace, then the afternoon flight out. If it was cancelled, this is the morning it flies instead. That is the whole point of building the week this way.
Booking Order That Protects Your Trip
- Book the balloon for the first available morning, not the last one. Every spare morning after it is a free second attempt.
- Book tours before you arrive in high season. April to June and September to October fill up, especially for the balloon.
- Read the cancellation terms before you pay. On our own tours, weather cancellations are covered by our cancellation and refund policy.
- Do not book two full day tours for the same day. It sounds obvious, but the Red Tour and the Underground City Tour both run 09:00 to 17:00.

Airport transfers in Cappadocia run about €10 to €15 per person on a shared shuttle, depending on the operator. Frequently Asked Questions
Is 7 days enough for Istanbul and Cappadocia?
Yes, comfortably. Seven days gives you three full days in each place plus a travel day. Adding a third destination such as Pamukkale or Ephesus in the same week is where trips start to feel like a bus schedule.
Can I do Cappadocia as a day trip from Istanbul?
It is sold, and we would not recommend it. The earliest flight lands around 08:30 and the last one leaves around 20:00, so you get roughly ten hours and no sunrise. The balloon flies at dawn, which a day trip cannot reach.
Should I fly into Kayseri or Nevşehir?
Kayseri (ASR) has more flights and cheaper fares but sits about 75 minutes from Göreme. Nevşehir (NAV) is only 30 to 40 minutes away but has far fewer flights. Do I need to rent a car in Cappadocia?
No. All of our group tours include free hotel pickup and drop off, and the villages are close together. A car is only useful if you want to chase sunrise viewpoints on your own.
How far in advance should I book the balloon?
Two to four weeks in high season, and earlier for holiday weeks. Baskets are limited by the civil aviation authority every morning, so it is not a question of price alone.
