Cappadocia has no airport of its own. It has two, in two different provinces, and the one you choose changes your arrival time, your transfer cost and, on a tight trip, whether you make your balloon morning at all.
Short version: Kayseri has more flights and cheaper fares but sits about 75 minutes away. Nevşehir is 30 to 40 minutes away but has very few flights. Below is how to decide, including the cases where the smaller airport is clearly the better choice.
Side by Side
| Kayseri (ASR) | Nevşehir (NAV) | |
|---|---|---|
| Full name | Kayseri Erkilet Airport | Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport |
| Distance to Göreme | About 75 km | About 40 km |
| Transfer time | 60 to 75 minutes | 30 to 40 minutes |
| Flights from Istanbul | Several per day, from both IST and SAW | Usually one or two per day |
| Airlines | Turkish Airlines, Pegasus, AJet | Mainly Turkish Airlines and AJet |
| Typical fare | Lower, more competition | Higher, fewer options |
| Airport size | Busier, more services | Small, you are out in minutes |
| Best for | Flexible schedules, budget fares | Late arrivals, short trips, families |
Flight schedules change every season, so treat the flight counts as a pattern rather than a timetable. Check the current schedule before you book.
Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR)
Kayseri is the default choice for most travellers, and for a good reason: choice. It serves a city of over a million people, so there are departures spread through the day from both Istanbul airports, plus connections from İzmir, Antalya and Ankara. When a plan changes, Kayseri is the airport that can absorb it.
The cost is the transfer. You land, you collect your bag, and you still have an hour or more of driving through Kayseri's outskirts before the landscape turns into fairy chimneys. That drive is easy, mostly on good road, but it is real time. If you land at 23:30 and your balloon pickup is at 04:30, you are looking at roughly three hours of sleep.
Fly into Kayseri if: you want the cheapest fare, you need a departure time that fits a work day, you are arriving from a city other than Istanbul, or your dates are still moving.
Nevşehir Kapadokya Airport (NAV)
Nevşehir is the closer airport, and everything about it is quicker. It is small, so the walk from the aircraft to the car park takes minutes, and the drive to Göreme, Ürgüp or Uçhisar is 30 to 40 minutes on a quiet road. On a two or three day trip, that difference is close to half a morning saved across arrival and departure combined.
The catch is supply. There are usually only one or two Istanbul flights a day, so if that flight is delayed or cancelled, there is no easy second option. Fares also tend to be higher because there is no competition on the route.
Fly into Nevşehir if: your trip is short, you are arriving late in the evening, you are travelling with small children or heavy luggage, or your hotel is in Uçhisar, Avanos or Çavuşin.
How Airport Transfers Actually Work
There are four ways to get from either airport to your hotel, and they are not equally good. Prices below are indicative 2026 ranges from third party providers and change with season and demand.
| Option | Indicative price | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Shared shuttle | €10 to €15 per person | Booked in advance, drops off hotel by hotel, can take up to an hour extra |
| Private transfer | €40 to €60 (ASR), €20 to €30 (NAV) | Direct, fixed price, meets you with a name sign |
| Hotel transfer | Free to €15 | Many cave hotels arrange it, ask when booking |
| Rental car | From about €40 per day | Only worth it if you plan to drive outside the region |
Whichever you pick, book it before you fly. Both airports empty out quickly after each arrival and a taxi negotiated at the door will always cost more.
Once you are in the region you do not need transport for tours. Hotel pickup and drop off is included on all of our group tours, whether you are staying in Göreme, Ürgüp, Uçhisar, Avanos or Çavuşin.
Three Real Situations
1. You land the night before your balloon flight
Choose Nevşehir if there is a flight, or take an earlier Kayseri flight. Balloon pickup is one to one and a half hours before sunrise, so a 23:30 landing at Kayseri puts you in bed at around 01:00 for an 04:30 alarm. It is doable once. It is not how you want to remember your balloon flight.
2. You only have two days
Nevşehir, without hesitation. Ninety minutes saved on arrival and departure is a real fraction of a two day trip.
3. You have a week and a flexible plan
Kayseri. More departures means more ways to fix a problem, and the money you save on the fare covers the transfer difference twice over. See how a full week fits together in our Istanbul and Cappadocia 7 day plan.
Departure Day: The Mistake We See Most Often
Our full day tours end at about 17:00 with hotel drop off. If you plan to tour on your last day, do not book a flight before 20:00 out of Kayseri or 19:00 out of Nevşehir. Guests regularly book a 17:30 flight and then have to leave the tour halfway through, at the last stop, which is usually the best viewpoint of the day.
If your flight is early, book a half day activity instead: a sunrise ATV tour, or an early walk in Pigeon Valley.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there a public bus from Kayseri airport to Göreme?
There is no direct public bus that connects reliably with every flight. The practical options are a shared shuttle booked in advance, a private transfer or a taxi. Some travellers take a city bus into Kayseri centre and then an intercity bus to Nevşehir, which saves money but costs two to three hours.
Can I fly into one airport and out of the other?
Yes, and it is often the cheapest combination. Book them as two one way tickets and arrange each transfer separately.
Which airport do international flights use?
Most international travellers connect through Istanbul (IST) or Sabiha Gökçen (SAW) and take a domestic flight from there. Kayseri also has a small number of seasonal direct international flights. Nevşehir is almost entirely domestic.
Are airport transfers included in your tours?
Airport transfers are separate from tours. What is included in every group tour is hotel pickup and drop off inside the region. If you would like us to arrange an airport transfer as well, tell us your flight number when you book.
How early should I get to the airport for my return flight?
Ninety minutes is enough at both. They are small airports and security queues are short, but the road from Göreme to Kayseri can slow down in bad winter weather.
