Skiing at Erciyes from Cappadocia: How to Combine Ski Days and Fairy Chimneys

Skiing Erciyes from Cappadocia: Trip Plan

Back to Blog

Yes, you can ski at Erciyes and see Cappadocia on one trip. Erciyes Ski Resort is on Mount Erciyes near Kayseri, about 80 km from Göreme, or roughly 1 hour 20 minutes by road when there is no snow or traffic. The easiest plan is Cappadocia first, with a spare balloon morning, then the ski days.

In short

  • Göreme to Erciyes (Tekir Gate) is about 80 km, roughly 1 hour 20 minutes on a clear road.
  • The ski season usually opens in December and can run into March or April.
  • Kayseri Airport (ASR) serves both halves of the trip.
  • Keep balloon mornings and ski days on separate dates.
  • We do not sell ski packages or Erciyes transfers; our part is the Cappadocia side.

What is Erciyes Ski Resort and when is it open?

Erciyes Ski Resort is on the slopes of Mount Erciyes (3,917 m), about 25 km from Kayseri city centre. The operator lists 34 runs totalling roughly 102 km, reached through four gates: Tekir, Hacılar, Hisarcık and Develi.

Snow decides the season. It usually opens in December and, in a good year, lasts into March or April; some years parts of the mountain opened at the end of November. Treat early December and April as uncertain, and check the resort's announcements before you travel. Equipment can be rented at the resort, so there is no need to fly with skis.

How far is Erciyes from Cappadocia, and how do you get there?

Göreme to the Tekir Gate is about 80 km by road: around 1 hour 20 minutes on dry roads with light traffic, a little less from Ürgüp. Add time when it snows, or on weekend mornings when everyone heads up the mountain at once.

In practice you drive yourself or hire a private driver. Winter tyres are not a legal requirement for private cars in Turkey, though the Ministry of Transport recommends them, so check with the rental company that your car has them.

Daylight is the other limit. In Göreme the sun sets at about 17:20 in mid-December and 17:43 in mid-January. To drive back before dark, leave the slopes by mid-afternoon.

Should you stay in Cappadocia or at Erciyes?

For one or two ski days, stay in Cappadocia. If skiing is the main event, sleep near the mountain or split your nights.

BaseWorks best forMain advantageMain drawback
Cappadocia, ski on day trips1-2 ski daysBalloon and tour pickup at your hotelAbout 2 h 40 min of driving per ski day
Erciyes, Cappadocia on day trips3 or more ski daysEarly start on the slopesNo tour or balloon pickup from the mountain
Split stay2 ski days and 2-3 Cappadocia daysShort drives on both sidesOne hotel change mid-trip

Keep in mind that our free hotel pickup covers Cappadocia towns only, not Kayseri or Erciyes. For first-time visitors who want both, we think the split stay is the most comfortable option.

How should you split 4-5 days between skiing and Cappadocia?

Do Cappadocia first and ski at the end. Balloon flights are cancelled more often in winter than in summer, so the balloon needs a spare morning. And since Kayseri is the closest city to Erciyes, finishing on the mountain usually shortens the ride to the airport.

A five-day plan we would suggest:

  • Day 1: Fly into Kayseri, transfer to your Cappadocia hotel, early night.
  • Day 2: First balloon attempt. Pickup is 1 to 1.5 hours before sunrise, so around 06:30 to 07:00 in December and January; we confirm the exact time after booking.
  • Day 3: If you flew, join a full-day tour. If not, this is your backup balloon morning.
  • Day 4: Move to Erciyes, or drive up early, for your first ski day.
  • Day 5: Ski in the morning, then an evening flight from Kayseri.

Book the balloon flight for Day 2 so a cancellation still leaves you a second chance. Do not try to fit a balloon and skiing into one date: a winter balloon morning fills most of the morning, the slopes are 80 km away, and a cancelled flight would leave you with no backup.

With three days or fewer, something has to give. Our guide on how many days you need in Cappadocia helps you choose what to keep.

Which airport should you fly into?

Kayseri Erkilet Airport (ASR). Kayseri is the nearest city to the resort and Göreme is about an hour away, so one airport covers both halves of the trip. Nevşehir Airport is closer to Göreme but further from the mountain, with far fewer flights. We compare the two in Kayseri or Nevşehir airport; for a ski trip, the answer is almost always Kayseri.

When is Erciyes crowded, and when is it quiet?

The busiest period is the Turkish school winter break, which runs from 25 January to 5 February 2027. During the 2025 break, 1.2 million visitors were announced for Erciyes, so expect queues at the lifts and the rental counters. Weekends are busier than weekdays all season.

With flexible dates, ski on weekdays outside the break: the first half of January, or late February into March if the snow holds. New Year's week is Cappadocia's busiest winter stretch, so skip it too if you want quiet days on both sides.

What can we arrange, and what can't we?

We are a Cappadocia tour company and would rather be clear about the limits. We do not sell ski passes, lessons, equipment or packages, and we run no scheduled shuttle to Erciyes. Our part is Cappadocia: balloon flights, group day tours and private days.

If you want a private day that includes the drive to or from Erciyes, mention it in a custom tour request with your dates and hotel, and we will look at availability together. Private tour prices are per group and depend on the route and duration.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there snow in Cappadocia when Erciyes is open?

Not necessarily. Snow in Göreme usually falls between December and February, but how long it stays varies a lot from year to year. You may ski at Erciyes and find bare, muddy valleys in Cappadocia the same week.

How cold is Cappadocia in January?

At the Nevşehir weather station, January averages a high of 4.0°C and a low of -3.6°C, and cold spells have gone below -20°C. Göreme is a little lower and can be a few degrees milder. The mountain is colder and windier, so dress for Erciyes, not for Göreme.

Is a single ski day worth the detour?

If you are mainly here for Cappadocia, yes: about 2 hours 40 minutes of driving buys you most of a day on the slopes. Keen skiers who want three days or more are better off sleeping at the mountain.

Can we fly into Kayseri and go to Erciyes first?

Yes. Just keep at least two mornings in Cappadocia at the end for the balloon, and leave a buffer before your flight home, as the road to Kayseri can slow down in snow.

Do your tours pick up from Kayseri or Erciyes?

No. Free hotel pickup covers Göreme, Ürgüp, Uçhisar, Avanos, Çavuşin and Ortahisar. Staying somewhere else? Tell us when you ask about a private tour.
