The Cappadocia Color-Coded Tours Explained
Cappadocia has three famous color-coded group tours: Red, Green and Blue. They're designed to cover different parts of the region with minimal overlap. Here's an honest guide.
Red Tour — Northern Cappadocia (Most Famous)
Duration: 7-8 hours | Price: €40
- Göreme Open Air Museum (UNESCO)
- Paşabağ / Monks Valley
- Devrent Imagination Valley
- Avanos pottery workshop
- Uçhisar Castle (exterior)
- Traditional lunch in Avanos
Best for: First-timers. Covers 80% of "classic Cappadocia" photos.
Green Tour — Southern Cappadocia
Duration: 8-9 hours | Price: €50
- Derinkuyu Underground City (85m deep)
- Ihlara Valley 4km hike
- Selime Monastery (Star Wars Tatooine filming location)
- Pigeon Valley viewpoint
- Lunch by the river in Ihlara
Best for: Travelers who've seen the "classic" spots. More active, includes hiking.
Blue Tour — Southeast Cappadocia (Less Common)
Duration: 8 hours | Price: €55-70
- Soğanlı Valley
- Mustafapaşa (old Greek village)
- Keşlik Monastery
- Sobesos ancient city
- Cemil Village
Best for: Return visitors or those with 4+ days. Less crowded, more off-the-beaten-path.
Can You Do All Three?
Yes, but only if you have 4 days minimum in Cappadocia. Here's the schedule:
- Day 1: Balloon + rest
- Day 2: Red Tour
- Day 3: Green Tour
- Day 4: Blue Tour OR ATV/horseback
Honest Recommendation by Trip Length
- 2 days: Red only (or Red + 1/2 day of exploring)
- 3 days: Red + Green (most popular combo)
- 4 days: Red + Green + Blue OR Red + Green + ATV
- 5+ days: All three + adventure activities
Overlap Between Tours
Red and Green cover completely different areas — no overlap. Blue slightly overlaps Green (both go south) but visits different specific sites. If you do only 2, Red + Green is the perfect split.
Should I Do Red or Green First?
Do Red first. It's more iconic, easier (less hiking) and helps you orient in Cappadocia. Green on day 2 is more demanding.
Tour Fatigue Warning
Doing 3 full-day tours in 3 consecutive days is exhausting. Consider spacing with one "rest day" (cave hotel, wine tasting, photo spots).
For most travelers, Red + Green covers 95% of what they'll want to see. Blue Tour is a lovely bonus for those staying longer.
