On a rainy or freezing day, head underground or indoors. The underground cities stay at about 13-15°C all year, the Göreme Open Air Museum's painted churches are cut into the rock, and pottery workshops, hammams and the evening sema ignore the weather. Guided day tours run all year; balloons and valley walks are what bad weather stops.
In short
- The Red Tour and the Green Plus Tour run all year, rain or shine.
- Weather mainly affects balloon flights, the ATV Tour, the Horse Tour and valley walks.
- Underground cities hold a steady 13-15°C, which feels mild on a January day.
- After rain, tuff and clay paths get very slippery, so leave the valley trails until they dry.
- An evening sema at Sarıhan Caravanserai near Avanos rounds off a grey day well.
What does bad weather actually stop in Cappadocia?
Rain, snow and strong wind stop the outdoor, weather-dependent activities, while the guided land tours keep running all year.
- Balloon flights: SHGM (Civil Aviation), the pilot and the operations team decide every morning. Rain, snow or poor visibility means no flight, and a cancelled flight is rebooked free or fully refunded.
- ATV Tour and Horse Tour: both use dirt tracks through the valleys, so heavy rain, mud or ice can push them to another day.
- Valley walks: wet tuff and clay turn slippery, and trail markings are patchy in places.
- Red Tour and Green Plus Tour: these run in every season, with a vehicle between stops and much of the day spent indoors or underground.
Why are the underground cities the best bad-weather choice?
Because the weather does not reach them. Kaymaklı and Derinkuyu stay at roughly 13-15°C all year, so on a January day, when the average high outside is 4°C, going underground feels milder. Rain makes no difference down there.
Our Green Plus Tour visits Kaymaklı, with lunch and all entrance fees included for €50; pickup is at 09:00 and you are back around 17:30. It is not all underground, though. The day also includes a walk in Soğanlı Valley, the Yılanlı (St. George) Church and Pigeon Valley, so bring a waterproof layer and shoes with grip.
Derinkuyu is a separate site, deeper and with tighter passages. Our guide to Derinkuyu Underground City explains how it compares with Kaymaklı.
Is the Göreme Open Air Museum worth visiting in the rain?
Yes, if you can live with wet paths between the churches. The churches are carved into the rock, so you stay dry while you look at the frescoes. The walk from one to the next is outdoors, uneven and partly on rock-cut steps.
In winter the museum is usually open 08:00 to 17:00, with last entry about an hour before closing. On a wet day, shoes with a good sole matter more than an umbrella. Our Göreme Open Air Museum guide goes through the churches one by one.
Which indoor workshops and experiences are worth doing?
Several local crafts happen under a roof, and some let you join in.
- Pottery in Avanos: this is the region's pottery town. You watch a master at the wheel and can try it yourself.
- Carpet and onyx workshops: one shows hand-knotting on the loom, the other how the stone is cut and polished. Where these stops are part of our tours, buying is optional.
- Hammam: Göreme and Ürgüp both have Turkish baths, and some cave hotels have their own. Ask your hotel which is closest and whether to book.
- Wine tasting: wineries around Ürgüp hold tastings in cellars carved into the tuff. We cover the local grapes and the harvest in our grape harvest season guide.
Where can you see a sema ceremony on a cold evening?
At Sarıhan Caravanserai, a Seljuk-era stone inn about 5 km from Avanos, where a sema ceremony is held regularly in the evenings. Places are by reservation, so book ahead. It is a religious ceremony rather than a stage show, so follow the hosts' guidance during it. With sunset around 17:20 in December, it is one of the few good ways to fill a long winter evening.
How do autumn rain and winter snow differ?
October and November have fewer wet days and mostly rain; December to February have more wet days, some of them snowy, and real cold.
At the Nevşehir weather station, October averages 7 days with precipitation and November 8.5, while December to February see about 12 a month. These counts include rain and snow together; there is no official count of snow days alone. Snow usually falls between December and February, though it can also come in November or March.
Temperature matters more than rain. In October the average high is still 18.3°C, so a shower is a nuisance and little more. In January the average high is 4.0°C and the low -3.6°C, and cold spells have gone below -20°C. On a freezing day you plan around warmth, not dryness.
After rain, tuff and clay valley paths become very slippery; after snow, shaded stretches can stay icy all morning. Wait until the surface dries, and keep any walk short and close to town.
How do you plan a rainy or freezing day?
Pick one indoor anchor and build the rest of the day around it.
| Activity | Indoors? | In rain | In snow or frost | Time needed |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Underground city | Yes, underground | Unaffected | Unaffected inside | About 1-1.5 h inside |
| Göreme Open Air Museum | Churches only | Fine with good shoes | Watch for ice on steps | 1.5-2 h |
| Pottery workshop, Avanos | Yes | Unaffected | Unaffected | About 45 min |
| Hammam | Yes | Unaffected | Unaffected | 1-2 h |
| Wine tasting in a cellar | Yes | Unaffected | Unaffected | About 1 h |
| Sema at Sarıhan | Yes | Unaffected | Unaffected | One evening |
| Valley walk | No | Wait until dry | Short routes only | 1-2 h or more |
With a car, this order works for a day on your own:
- Göreme Open Air Museum at 08:00, when it opens.
- A pottery workshop in Avanos in the late morning.
- A hammam in Göreme or Ürgüp, or a cellar tasting in Ürgüp, in the afternoon.
- The sema at Sarıhan in the evening.
If you would rather not drive on wet roads, a full-day tour with hotel pickup does the same job: the Red Tour covers the museum and the pottery workshop, the Green Plus Tour covers Kaymaklı.
Frequently Asked Questions
Does the Red Tour run when it rains?
Yes, all year, from 09:30 to 17:00. The museum, the pottery and onyx workshops and lunch are indoors; Devrent Valley, the Uçhisar Castle viewpoint and Pigeon Valley are outdoor stops of 30 to 45 minutes, so a rain jacket is enough.
Do tours still run when it snows?
Yes. Guided tours run through the winter and the main roads are cleared regularly. Expect slower driving and icy patches at viewpoints, and wear shoes with grip.
Which autumn or winter month is the driest?
October, with an average of 7 days with precipitation at the Nevşehir station, against about 12 a month from December to February. Of the months from October to March, it also gets the most sunshine, around 6.5 hours a day.
Is Cappadocia still worth visiting if rain is forecast all week?
Usually yes, with adjusted expectations. The averages suggest most weeks have dry spells too, but nobody can know that in advance. If the balloon is the main reason for your trip, a wet week is a real risk; if you came for the history and the landscape, there is plenty to do under a roof.
A grey day here is not a lost day. Pick one indoor anchor, save the outdoor plans for clearer skies, and send us your dates if you want help fitting a guided tour around the forecast.
