When Balloons Fly
- Year-round: Yes, but winter has more cancellations
- Best months: April–June, September–October (80–90% flight rate)
- Worst months: December–February (50–60% cancellation rate)
- Flight time: Takeoff at sunrise (5–7am depending on season)
- No afternoon/evening flights: Atmospheric conditions only permit sunrise
Safety — Is It Safe?
Yes. Cappadocia has one of the best balloon safety records in the world:
- Civil Aviation Authority of Turkey (SHGM) regulates all flights
- Only licensed companies with certified pilots can operate
- Weather decisions made independently by each pilot + central authority
- Mandatory safety briefing before every flight
- Insurance included
Incidents are extremely rare. Do not book with unlicensed operators offering suspiciously low prices.
How to Book
- Book 2–3 weeks ahead in peak season (May–June, Sep–Oct)
- Book directly with local operators — 10–20% cheaper than OTAs
- Stay 2+ nights in case of weather cancellation
- Prefer Day 1 of your visit — gives backup day
- Confirm pickup by SMS/WhatsApp the night before
What to Wear
- Warm layers — even in summer it's cold at altitude
- Closed-toe shoes (no sandals — basket landings can be bumpy)
- No skirts (climbing into the basket)
- Gloves in winter
- Hat for pilot flame (it's fine, just warm above your head)
What If It's Cancelled?
- Refund in full, no questions asked (by law)
- Or reschedule if you have another day
- Weather decision made at 4–5am, you'll be notified by SMS
- Never argue to fly in bad weather — pilots' judgment saves lives
What's Included in the Price
- Hotel pickup and drop-off
- Light breakfast before flight
- Safety briefing
- 60+ minute flight
- Champagne toast on landing
- Flight certificate
- Photos/video usually NOT included
Tips for First-Timers
- It's quieter than you think — the burner is on only ~10% of the time
- No motion sickness — you float, you don't sway
- Not scary if you're afraid of heights — the basket is solid
- Best photos: mid-flight when other balloons are visible around you
- Landing can be gentle OR a little rough — brace in landing position
Can You Watch Balloons for Free?
Yes. Sunrise Point, Sunset Point, Love Valley viewpoint are all free. Arrive 30 min before sunrise. Not the same as riding, but 100+ balloons over the landscape is magical from below too.
Is It Worth €150?
Almost everyone who flies says yes, this was the highlight of their entire trip — not just Turkey, often their entire year. If you can afford it, do it. If not, the free viewpoints are still spectacular.
