Dressing for Your Cappadocia Balloon Flight
Balloon flights leave at sunrise when it's cold. You'll climb in and out of a 4-foot basket. Here's exactly what to wear and what to avoid.
Key Principles
- Layers: Ground cold, air warm(ish), can remove
- Closed-toe shoes: Landings can be bumpy
- Nothing hanging: Loose scarves near burner are dangerous
- Easy to climb in: No pencil skirts or tight dresses
Spring/Fall (March-May, Sep-Nov)
- Long pants (jeans or leggings)
- Long-sleeve shirt
- Light jacket or fleece
- Closed-toe sneakers
- Light scarf (tucked in)
Summer (June-August)
- Still wear long pants (mornings are cold)
- Long-sleeve shirt
- Light jacket you can remove (basket warms up in sun)
- Closed-toe sneakers
- Sunglasses, sun hat (for landing/post-flight)
Winter (December-February)
- Thermal base layer
- Warm pants (insulated or thick jeans)
- Warm sweater
- Heavy winter jacket
- Beanie/warm hat (keeps head warm from burner flame above)
- Gloves (essential)
- Warm socks, waterproof shoes
- Thermal scarf (not loose)
What NOT to Wear
- Skirts or dresses (need to climb into basket)
- Sandals or flip-flops (landings can be bumpy)
- High heels (don't even think about it)
- Loose flowing scarves (fire hazard near burner)
- Large earrings (catch on straps)
- White/light-colored shoes (landings get dusty)
Accessories to Bring
- Camera with strap
- Phone in zippered pocket
- Small day bag only (large bags are left in vehicle)
- Nothing that can fall out
For Instagram Photos
- Red, white or bright solid colors pop against sky
- Flowy (but not dangerous) fabrics look great in wind
- Hats add style but secure them
- Sunglasses for golden hour shots
Don't Forget
- Bathroom break before hotel pickup (2-3 hour commitment ahead)
- Eat something light (most flights include breakfast AFTER landing)
- Minimal skin exposure on the face from burner radiation
Dress warm, in layers, with closed shoes. That's 90% of it. The other 10% is avoiding loose fabrics near the burner and wearing something photogenic for the sky.
