Cappadocia with Kids in Winter: A Practical Family Plan

Cappadocia with Kids in Winter: Family Plan

Back to Blog

Cappadocia works well with children in winter, as long as you plan around short days and cold mornings. Give each day one main activity, keep the underground city for the coldest day, and treat the balloon as a bonus: children must be at least 6 years old and 1.10 m tall to fly.

In short

  • Daylight in December and January lasts about 9.5 hours, so plan one main outing a day.
  • Average highs are 4-6°C, and mornings usually start below freezing.
  • Children under 6 join our tours free, and ages 6-12 get 50% off.
  • The underground cities stay at around 13-15°C all year.
  • Christmas week and the Turkish school break (25 January to 5 February 2027) fill up first.

Is Cappadocia a good winter trip for children?

Yes, for most families it is, and in some ways winter is easier than summer. Outside the holiday peaks the sites are quiet, and there is no midday heat to manage.

The harder parts are real, though. Official averages in Nevşehir are 6.2°C by day and -1.3°C at night in December, then 4.0°C and -3.6°C in January. Göreme can be a few degrees milder, but cold snaps have pushed recorded lows below -20°C. It gets dark around 17:20-17:30 in December and early January, and valley paths turn muddy or icy after rain and snow. None of this rules out a family trip. It changes how you plan each day.

When are the busiest family weeks in winter?

Christmas to New Year is the busiest winter week, followed by the Turkish mid-year school break. School holidays differ from country to country, but these two periods fill up first. In 2027 Turkish schools are off from 25 January to 5 February, and many families pair Cappadocia with skiing at Erciyes near Kayseri, so hotels in both areas get busy.

Early to mid January and the weeks after 5 February are much calmer. For the busy weeks, book the hotel first, then the balloon, then the day tours.

Which activities suit which ages in winter?

Most of our day tours suit children of any age; the balloon and the ATV are the exceptions.

Balloon flights with children

The rule is strict: at least 6 years old and 1.10 m tall. In December and January the sun rises around 07:40-08:00 and pickup comes 1-1.5 hours earlier, far later than the 04:30-05:00 pickups of summer. We send the exact time after booking. Winter brings more cancellations, so leave two or three mornings free. If a younger sibling cannot fly, one parent can stay behind and watch the launch with them from a viewpoint or the hotel terrace.

Underground cities

Children usually love the tunnels, and on a freezing day this is the best outing, because the air inside stays at around 13-15°C. Kaymaklı, which our Green Plus Tour visits, has wider passages than Derinkuyu; our Derinkuyu underground city guide compares the two. Bring a baby carrier, not a stroller.

Horses, pottery and short walks

On our Cappadocia horse tour the horses are calm and used to visitors, children get a child saddle and a helmet, and an adult stays with them. Rides do not go out in snow or storms. The Avanos pottery workshop on the Red Tour is a warm indoor stop with a potter's wheel to watch. Keep walks short and close to the hotel, since wet tuff and clay get very slippery after rain or a thaw.

We do not recommend ATV rides for young children in winter. At speed, the wind is bitter even on a sunny day.

Will there be snow for the kids to play in?

Maybe, but nobody can promise snow. It usually falls between December and February, sometimes in November or March, and how long it stays on the ground varies widely from year to year. The weather service counts about 12 days of rain or snow in each winter month, without separating the two.

If snow is the point of the trip, check the forecast in the final week and keep a couple of days open. If it doesn't snow, the underground city and the Red Tour run as normal.

How do you pace a short winter day with children?

Plan one main activity a day and be back at the hotel by mid-afternoon. A rhythm that suits most families:

  • Breakfast after sunrise, which is close to 08:00 in early January.
  • Main outing from mid-morning: a day tour, the underground city or a horse ride.
  • Late lunch, then a rest at the hotel while it is still light.
  • A short walk to a viewpoint before sunset, then an early dinner.

Our Red Tour runs 09:30-17:00, a full day for a toddler. With very young children, a half-day custom tour (price on request) lets you pick the stops and keep the day short. Ask for a child seat when you book; we provide them on all tours if requested in advance. Hotel pickup is free from Göreme, Ürgüp, Uçhisar, Avanos, Çavuşin and Ortahisar. Ideally, spread the trip over 3-4 days.

What do children pay on our tours?

Children under 6 join our tours free, and ages 6-12 pay half price. On the Red Tour, the standard group price is €55 per adult, so a 7-year-old pays half of that and a 4-year-old pays nothing. The balloon has its own age rule, so confirm the child fare when you book it. Our family-friendly tours page lists every tour with its age rules.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is a stroller practical in Cappadocia in winter?

Only on paved town streets. Village lanes are steep and cobbled, the open air museum and the underground cities have steps, and paths get muddy after rain or snow. A baby carrier is much easier.

Will young children be scared in the underground city?

Most find it exciting, though a few feel uneasy in the narrow tunnels. Keep small children just ahead of you and step back into a wider room when they need a break. Telling the guide at the start also helps.

What if the balloon is cancelled on our only free morning?

The decision is taken each morning by the civil aviation authority (SHGM), the pilots and the operations team. If your flight is cancelled, you can move to a new date free of charge or get a full refund. That is why we ask families to keep two or three mornings open.

Do tours run on Christmas Day?

Yes. 25 December is a normal working day in Turkey, so our tours run as usual. 1 January is a public holiday, and the days around it are the busiest of the winter, so book early if your trip falls then.

Send us your dates and your children's ages, and we can suggest a calm order for the tours with spare balloon mornings built in. Our family tour article explains how we plan trips with children throughout the year.
